A full day in Minecraft lasts twenty minutes: roughly ten minutes of day light, and ten minutes of night. If you aren't ready to build your shelter by sunset, you'll be vulnerable to attacks from zombies, skeletons, spiders, and creepers. So let's get started right away.
Find the nearest tree and start punching it. Collect the rotating log blocks that fall.

Be sure to get every last bit of wood.

After you have collected about 10 logs, press
i
to display your inventory. Drag your logs into the crafting area. Wooden Planks will appear to the right. Right click the planks to convert all your logs.
Now place a wooden plank in each square to create a Crafting Table.

Drag the Crafting Table to the very bottom of your inventory and exit by pressing
i
again. With your table in hand, right click anywhere to place it.
Right click your placed Crafting Table to bring up your new-and-improved nine square crafting area. Place two planks vertically to make some sticks.

Make a Wooden Pickaxe:

Now you just need some light for your shelter, but to make torches you need coal. Do some wandering around cliffs until you find some and mine it.

Make a few torches:

Mine/dig a hole out of the side of the nearest mountain:

If you want to get fancy, make yourself a door for your shelter.

You made it!

While you're holding up for the night, you should mine some stone and make the following tools:

If you have enough torches, go ahead and expand your cave and explore. When the sun comes up you'll need to go out and do some hunting and cooking. I will explain that in Part II of this guide.
I hope this was helpful to someone. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments.
Happy crafting!
